R. Carter Freeman
CMC, Chairman and CEO
Pasadena and Hong Kong Offices
Carter Freeman founded Janas in the belief that middle market private and smaller public companies deserve the same level of sophisticated advice as their larger competitors. He was drawn to these companies because they are innovators who have found new approaches to their markets that allow them to successfully compete against much larger companies. These clients are the backbone of the US economy who generate most of the new jobs and many of the most successful new products. But they are also companies that are often given meager support by lenders and investors in times like these. Frequently they must make do with advisors inexperienced in the world of finance and acquisitions.
Since founding Janas, Carter has recruited consultants and investment bankers from the top ranks of industry and finance who have survived and prospered through recessions and credit crunches. Coming out of a consulting and transactional background himself, Carter believes that the combination of sound business advice and experienced deal making creates uncommonly successful outcomes for clients.
Carter is an inveterate deal maker. Shortly after graduation from Emory University, Carter founded his own accounting firm and soon thereafter made a series of acquisitions that rapidly grew his practice. His accounting firm caught the eye of Pannell Kerr Forster with whom he merged. Carter realized that he was interested in business development and advice, so he transferred to Hawaii and became a management consultant for Pacific Rim companies and governmental entities.
As a senior manager and partner at Touche Ross & Co. and Pannell Kerr Forster, Carter completed economic development studies, negotiated transactions and evaluated projects that helped enrich clients ranging from the governments of Taiwan and Samoa, to large hotel chains such as Marriott and Hilton.
Carter has seen Janas expand to 15 investment bankers and consultants with offices in Pasadena, California; Honolulu, Hawaii; Austin, Texas; and Hong Kong and Guangzhou, China.
Carter gets deals done through a combination of innovative solutions and tough negotiations. One client noted that his Southern charm opened doors, but his persistence and toughness got the deal closed.
Carter is a great story teller, a perceptive hunter, and a loyal friend. He employs these passions in his investment banking role by telling his client’s story in a compelling and unique way, finding them the right partner and aggressively representing his client’s interests to achieve a superior outcome. As a consultant, the profitability and enterprise value of his client companies are enhanced.
