Michael O’Connell has more than 40 years of experience in domestic and international investment banking and the management and administration of companies providing diversified financial services. He is a Managing Director and key member of the professional team at Janas Associates.
He was a Founder and Managing Director of Angeles Capital Group, a middle market investment banking firm.
Michael moved to Los Angeles from London where he was Deputy Managing Director responsible for the international securities business for Chemical Bank International. He managed offices in London and Hong Kong until 1984. His responsibilities included managing the trading and underwriting activities of the Bank in Eurobond Securities. He accomplished a financial turnaround from a substantial loss to a profitable position.
Michael had management responsibility for secondary trading positions of up to $140 million at any time. He also had significant responsibility for pricing new issues, which could result in financial commitment by the bank up to $100 million or more per issue. Prior to joining Chemical’s Merchant Banking Group in London in 1979, he represented Chemical Bank as a financial advisor of Petrolios, the Venezuelan national oil company. After leaving Chemical Bank, he acquired and ran a financial consulting software business for five years.
In Los Angeles, Michael has practiced investment banking and corporate finance consulting for middle market companies. He founded OSP Capital with the principals of Sanli, Pastore & Hill, Inc. a business valuation firm. Previously, he was a principal in the middle market investment banking firm of Chelsea Capital Corporation.
Michael began his career in New York at Chase Manhattan Bank, then Blyth Eastman Paine Webber and subsequently, William D. Witter, Inc. (later acquired by Drexel Burnham).
In late 1999, Michael led an investment group that acquired the largest senior demographic monthly newspaper in the West, reaching 800,000 readers. He was Chairman and CEO of this publishing company for almost four years until he sold it successfully to a private equity firm that specializes in communication and media investments.
Michael is a graduate of Yale University and is currently on the board of several private companies. He is licensed with FINRA as Series 7, 24 and 63, with a Janas affiliate, South Lake Avenue Securities Corp.
